Prayer for Anxiety and Worry

Short and longer Christian prayers, Scripture, and a five-minute practice for an anxious or worried moment.

TL;DR

If you need words right now, pray: Jesus, stay with me in this moment. Hold what I cannot control, quiet what is not true, and show me the next faithful step. Give my body rest and my mind a place to return. Amen.

Prayer does not require you to become calm before you begin. Bring the racing thoughts, tight chest, unfinished decisions, and repeated questions as they are. The purpose is not to perform peace but to place your attention in the presence of God, one moment at a time.

A short prayer for anxiety

God of peace, I am here, and you are here. My thoughts are moving faster than I can carry them. Help me release the future I cannot control, receive the care available in this moment, and take the next wise step. Guard my mind from what is not true. Hold me in your love. Amen.

If even that is too long, match one line to your breathing: “You are here” as you breathe in; “I am not alone” as you breathe out.

A longer prayer for worry

Merciful God, you know what I fear and why it feels urgent. I give you the conversations I am rehearsing, the outcomes I am trying to control, and the questions I cannot answer tonight. Separate the danger that needs action from the possibility that needs release. Give me courage where I can act, patience where I must wait, and humility to ask for help. Bless the people whose lives are tied to these worries. Keep me truthful, gentle, and present. Let your peace guard me without closing my eyes to what needs care. Amen.

Scripture for an anxious moment

Philippians 4:6–9

Paul connects prayer with gratitude and then turns attention toward what is true, honorable, just, and worthy of praise. The passage offers a pattern: name the concern, ask for help, remember what remains good, and give the mind something truthful to practice.

Matthew 6:25–34

Jesus directs attention from an imagined future back to God's present care. The teaching does not deny real needs. It refuses the belief that worry can secure tomorrow and asks for faithfulness in the day actually given.

Psalm 23

The psalm moves through rest, guidance, danger, companionship, and home. It is especially useful when you need a prayer spacious enough to include both fear and trust.

A five-minute prayer practice

  1. Settle: place both feet on the floor and loosen your shoulders.
  2. Name: complete the sentence, “God, I am afraid that…”
  3. Sort: ask, “Is there one wise action I can take now?”
  4. Release: name what cannot be solved in this moment.
  5. Return: repeat one line of Scripture or the short prayer above.

The goal is not to force a particular feeling. It is to practice returning. For a similar pause before digital noise, use Prayer Before Scrolling.

When prayer should include more help

Occasional anxiety is part of life. Anxiety that persists, intensifies, or interferes with sleep, work, school, relationships, or ordinary activities may need professional attention. Prayer and clinical care are not rivals; both can belong within a truthful response to suffering.

Consider speaking with a qualified health professional if anxiety is hard to control or is narrowing your daily life. If you may harm yourself or someone else, or you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or a crisis service where you live now.

Frequently asked questions

What is a short prayer for anxiety?

Jesus, stay with me in this moment. Hold what I cannot control, quiet what is not true, and show me the next faithful step. Give my body rest and my mind a place to return. Amen.

What Bible verse helps with anxiety?

Philippians 4:6–9 is a helpful place to begin because it joins honest petition, gratitude, peace, and deliberate attention to what is true and worthy.

Is feeling anxious a sign of weak faith?

No. Anxiety can arise from many ordinary, physical, relational, and clinical causes. Scripture repeatedly makes room for fear and distress while inviting people to bring them honestly to God and to receive help from others.

Can prayer replace therapy or medication for anxiety?

Prayer can be an important spiritual practice, but it is not a substitute for appropriate professional care. Persistent or severe anxiety deserves support from a qualified health professional.

How do I pray when my mind will not slow down?

Use fewer words. Put both feet on the floor, breathe slowly, and repeat one brief line such as “God, you are here; I am not alone.” Let the repetition carry your attention when a longer prayer is difficult.
